Department of Management Studies

Two – year full time MBA, an all inclusive programme integrates Business theory, Critical skills and Practical application through hands-on experiences and activity based learning. The MBA Programme is affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj University, Approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi.

The Department of Business Administration (DOBA) has been successfully offering the BBA Programme since 1972 to help build the nation in its march towards Economic resurgence. The Department of Management Studies (DOMS) started the MBA programme in 1994 with the approval of AICTE. DOMS has adopted time honored as well as innovative methods to metamorphose the student material into an effective managerial material within a short span of two years. In addition to the curriculum, personality development programme and counseling are organised to enable us to achieve the above objective.

The department provides sound infrastructure with eminent and well experienced faculty. Almost all members of the faculty have industrial experience spanning to decades. The rich background enables them to illustrate each theory and principles taught with examples from practical experience which is of paramount importance to the students. In addition to the above, to update the students with the current industrial scenario, the Department of Management Studies also brings a number of personalities from the industry as visiting lecturers.

OVERVIEW

Objectives Department of Management Studies

Upon successful completion of the Master in Business Administration course, the students will be able to:
• Work in any environment pertinent to their respective specialization
• Lead a large team
• Become an entrepreneur
Students acquire a comprehensive foundation in the fundamentals of business and in the global environment where they will function The students apply the analytical tools for intelligent decision-making.

Eligibility for Admission

• Students must have graduated in any discipline with 50% aggregate marks in 10 +2+3 or 10+3+3 format.
• The MBA admission criteria are based on the valid score of entrance exam conducted by either MAT /TANCET/CONSORTIUM of Self Financing Professional, Arts and Science Colleges in Tamilnadu.

Duration of the Course

The duration of the MBA Programme course shall be two academic years comprising four semesters with two semesters in each academic year.

Course Content

The course details outline the key subjects a student will learn in each semester. The course starts off with fundamentals and gradually moves on to more detailed aspects of Business Management.
Core papers: All semesters put together 15 subjects
Electives: 5 subjects from choice of Marketing area, HR area and Finance area


Non major elective: 1 subject
Project: 45 days during the final semester
Viva Voce: All 4 semesters (External only)
Semester 1. Management Theory and Practice, Managerial Economics, Organisational Behaviour, Quantitative
Techniques and Management Accounting.
Semester 2. Management Information System, Marketing Management, Financial Management, Operations Management and Human Resource Management
Semester 3. Core Subjects: Business Environment and Law, Research Methodology, Business Application Software
Non Major elective: Effective Communication
Any 2 subjects from the following areas
Marketing area: Product Management, Marketing Research, Distribution Management, Personal
Selling and Sales Management, Advertising and Sales Promotion
HR area: Training and development, Wages and Salary Administration, Performance Management
Finance Area: International Trade Finance and Documentation, Indian Capital Market, Management of Financial Institutions
Semester 4. Core Subjects: Strategic Management, Higher Management techniques
Any 3 subjects from the following areas
Marketing Area: Industrial marketing, Buyer behavior, Service Marketing

SALIENT FEATURES OF DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES (MBA)

MASC:
MASC - Management Association of Sourashtra College is the brain child of our students and staff formed with an aim to bring out the inherent talent of our students to the limelight. MASC serves as the touch bearer by inviting eminent guest lecturers from academicians and industrialists to give a ringside view of the dynamic business world. Industrial visits are often arranged for our students to get and awareness of the corporate realities. MASC has been also arranging psychosomatic health programmes for executives such as yoga, Transcendental Meditation, Art of living and transactional Analysis.
GUEST LECTURES AND CORPORATE INTERACTIONS
The Department engages visiting faculty from amongst academia, management practitioners and consultants. Experts from Business Schools and corporate world across India are invited to deliver special lecture.
INDUSTRIAL VISITS
The Faculty members of Department of Management Studies are known for their out-of- the-box teaching and pedagogy methods. One such programme is the Industrial Visit (IV). Industrial visit focuses on preparing the students to learn about the day-to-day working environment of Industries and understand its operational issues.
The programme also helps and keeps students updated with present management principles and practices followed in their organization and acquire traits that the industry demands for them.
INTERNSHIP AND PLACEMENTS INTERNSHIP
The Department of Management Studies has an active Training & Placement Cell to facilitate placements internships and other related activities. Internship of students with the corporate houses is one of the important components of the course curriculum of MBA at Sourashtra College. Such internship not only exposes the students to the real business situations but also provide them with an opportunity to deal with the selected business projects that warrant scholarly analysis and investigation. During the 4th semester, the interns are required to write the project report under the joint supervision of the mentor from the relevant organization and a faculty from the Department.
The internship is for a period of 6-8 weeks and begins in the first week of February every year. The selection of organizations and the placement of students is a meticulous process and are done by the well-established by department.
PLACEMENT
There exists a high degree of emphasis on maintaining close liaison with the Industry & other employers. Interaction of the students with professionals from Industry is arranged regularly. This is apart from the regular training & mock interview sessions arranged for grooming up the students for final placements.
The Department has an impressive placement record as a good number of the maiden batch of its outgoing students has been placed in various business houses of national repute. We believes in our huge talent pool of young potential managers equipped with sharp analytical and problem-solving abilities, impeccable attitude, and a capability to manage and lead change. As we move into the current phase of consolidation and growth, Sourashtra College, Department of Management Studies is surely going to find itself amongst the preferred destinations for recruiters. The prominent names of the recruiters of our MBA pass outs include Just Dial, MRF, Toyota, Axis Bank, HDFC Banks, Hindustan Unilever, ITC etc.
The Placement cell is headed by Director, Dr.S.Thaigarajan, who is assisted by a team of Faculty members. The internship placement also promotes liaison between the company on the one hand and the Department of Management Studies and its students on the other and therefore sets the stage for the final placement of students.
