The MCA Department

The Department of mca was started in Aug 1998 with an approval of AICTE. And the affiliation of Madurai Kamaraj University. The department has adopted time honored as well as innovative method to develop its students into readily acceptable software. At present Sourashta College occupies a senior position to provide computer related courses even to satisfy the need of students hailing form rural and downtrodden areas.We are marching towards epoch-making in the annals of history of IT.

We have successfully completed the First Session of our Career Development Program and Inter-Disciplinary Program (CCNA). We are stepping towards our next victorious step towards Placement, Projects for UG and PG with Inter-Disciplinary Program and Software Development Program.

Eligiblity

The candidate should be a graduate in any discipline of Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai with Mathematics as compulsory subject at +2 level or should have passed any degree examination of any University equivalent to that of Madurai Kamaraj University with Mathematics / Statistics / computer Science as a subject.

Duration Of Course

The students shall undergo the prescribed course of study for a period of three academic years.(six semesters).

MCA Course shall extend through a period of six consecutive semesters and the duration of a semester normally shall be 90 days or 540 hours.
A. Teaching Aids For Effective teaching, sophisticated instruments like Overhead Projectors, Slide Projectors, Audio System and LCD Projectors are being utilized.
B. Library The College has invested a huge amount on Computer Books,Journals of Nationals and International repute and Periodicals exclusively for MCA Programme. Books are issued to all the Students for their study at home, from the very beginning of the course. The Library has a wide range of Computer Science Books, including 468 E-books related to computer subjects. Leading magazines related to computer science, Information Technology and Newspapers are subscribed. To ensure speedy, reliable and accurate current information teaching faculty and students, we are having automation of library services with CD-ROM collections, in addition to the installation of CDS ISIS Software.

• Well equipped, Air-Conditioned computer lab is available exclusively for MCA Programme. Qualified Programmers properly guide the students to use the lab in a perfect order.
• Separate IBM higher-end server for Novell Netware, Unix, Windows.
• IBM X226 Xeonserver: Single intel Xeon @3.0 Ghz, Processor.
• IBM, Intel & Core2duo Pentium D @2.8Ghz, dual core CPU (EM64T,800 Mhz FSB, 2X 1 MB Cache), 15 TET Collour Monitors with Multimedia System.

Future Plan: To conduct national level seminar. To enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with Cognizant and Tata Consultancy Services in future. To Design Curriculum on par with British University of Columbia.

Prof. S. Bharanisethupandian is the head of the department which has five staff members. They are qualified with M.Phil. and M.C.A.

Students with a minimum mark of 55% are eligible to be admitted for MCA. This condition is not applicable for students who are admitted on Management quota and belonging to other than OC. 50% of male students and 50% of female students get enrolled in our course. Students from local and neighboring areas (in and around Madurai) join in our course.

After introduction of autonomous system in our college, the syllabus was revised this year.

In the last five years, the department produced 100% results and no drop outs during this period.

The Department Library has a total number of 6,902 books under various titles. Various journals and news papers are subscribed by the Department Library. There are 90 computers with four servers available in the computer lab. Internet (Wi-Fi) connection, Printers, Mounted Projectors, Print papers etc. are available to help the students for their learning.

The department has one LCD for teaching and e-books, journal, text books, reference books are added to the department library. LCD projector facility is available in the department for guest lectures and seminar classes.

The department takes utmost care of the academic and personal problems of its students by personal counseling.

Prof. T.N. Dinesh has attended a two day faculty development programme on Research Direction in Data Mining at Thiagarajar School of management, Madurai on 25.03.2010 & 26.03.2010

The staff members contribute towards guiding projects, conducting seminars and workshop.

Our staff members took a seven day course for Police department Personnel to educate about computers and curriculum designed specifically for them.
One faculty member has published a paper in the international journal

Students are assessed through internal tests, assignments, seminars, quiz programmes and the class tests are also conducted periodically for the students. Placement Cell of the college gives all the notices and brochures to the department for circulation among the students. Guest lectures and seminars conducted by the department motivate the students to prepare for competitive examinations. The department published a book on “Gateway to Dot net” by Shanlax publications. Students participate in the seminars and conferences conducted in various other colleges.
